The “SMSGate” of Ursula von der Leyen
Ursula von der Leyen has been the President of the European Commission since 2019. In the context of the Coronavirus epidemic, Ursula von der Leyen has self-assigned the task of negotiating grouped purchases of vaccines on behalf of European countries, including with the laboratory Pfizer.

The SMS messages more likely contain information on the contract negotiation conditions and the vaccines’ price. Indeed, the dose price has increased from 15.50 euros to 19.50 euros. The contract should have been negotiated and justified by scientific experts and European Commission negotiators. Beyond transparency, it is the more than embarrassing relationship of a senior European official with the CEO of an American multinational, involving some thirty billion euros of public money, that is inadmissible.

The decision to erase [data from a] cell phone without having been established that it could be used as evidence is outside the scope of the usual disputes between a government and a parliamentary inquiry committee. This is an apparent scandal,” said Tobias Lindner (Greens), a committee member.
Specialist in defense issues within the Green group in the Bundestag, Mr. Lindner filed a complaint with the Berlin prosecutor, according to Spiegel published Saturday. Filed on Friday, it is based on paragraph 274 of the Criminal Code, which makes anyone liable to the prosecution who deletes, deletes, alters, or renders unusable data that could be used as evidence “in an investigation.“
